BOARD MEMBERS

The Board of Directors governs and manages the organization and makes decisions on policy management. Board members are selected for their interest in, concern for, and personal commitment to helping UHA preserve and present history to communities.

Marianne Bez -- Chair

Cooperstown

Marianne has over twenty years experience in administrative work for museums and nonprofits. As a staff member and volunteer, she has worked on public relations and audience development. She has experience in raising funds through grant writing, major gifts development, planned giving programs, special events, and direct mail. Her professional positions include five years in Public Relations, membership programs and development at the New York State Historical Association; and five years as the Assistant Director of Development at Bassett Hospital. She presently works as a private consultant for small museums and non-profit organizations in public relations, membership, and strategic planning. Marianne has been active on the Boards of the Cooperstown Concert Series, and the Cooperstown League of Women Voters for which she is the treasurer.  She holds a Masters Degree in History Museum Studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program where she is a guest lecturer in membership. She served on the Board of the Cooperstown Alumni Association for six years including a term as President of the Association.

Sally Treanor -- Vice Chair
Senior Director, Administration & Operations
Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society, Buffalo

Sally Treanor is Senior Director, Administration & Operations and Grants Coordinator of the Buffalo and Erie County Historical Society, Buffalo, New York. She is responsible for supervising institution-wide daily operations, including Museum Shop, maintenance, technology, statistics collection, performance in annual visitation and earned revenues, and stewardship of all government grants. Since 2003, she has been interim head of Research and Interpretation, directly supervising museum education, exhibits, and program planning and implementation. She has been at the Historical Society since 1996. Prior to that, she was a grant writer and director of foundation relations at a private college. In addition, for the last thirty years she has been a working artist, both teaching and exhibiting transparent watercolor. She has bachelor’s (D’Youville College) and master’s (Canisius College) degrees in English literature.

She is currently a NYSCA Exhibit Auditor, a MANY Peer Charter Reviewer, and Upstate History Get Ready/Get Set Facilitator. She joined the Board of Upstate History, of which she is Vice Chair, in January 2007. She has also served as NYSCA/UHA Get Set panelist, NYCH Grants Review Consultant, and Buffalo and Erie County Arts Council CAST regrant panelist. Boards on which she has served include Buffalo Arts Studio, Arts Council in Buffalo and Erie County, American Psychiatric Association Alliance, the Landmark Society of the Niagara Frontier, and D’Youville College Alumni Association.

Andy Kitzmann -- Treasurer

Andy Kitzman, Assistant Director and Curator of the Erie Canal Museum, brings his passion for both art and history to the UHA Board. "My work as a historian has dovetailed nicely with my earlier experiences in the fine arts" says Andy. "I love to create exhibitions and work fine art into the visual aspects of the show to help illustrate an historical point."

Starlyn D'Angelo--Executive Committee Member at Large

Shaker Heritage Society, Albany

Starlyn D'Angelo is currently the Executive Director of the Shaker Heritage Society. She previously held positions as Curator at the Shaker Museum & Library and the Old Stone Fort Museum and has worked as a curatorial consultant for several small museums. Ms. D'Angelo received a MA in Museum Studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program and a BA in Art History with a minor in Business from Colorado State University.

Ruth Ellen Berninger

Columbia County Historical Society, Kinderhook

Ruth Ellen Berninger is currently the Educator at the Columbia County Historical Society in Kinderhook, where she has been since 1996. Her work at CCHS includes a Museums in the Classroom program where students create their own museum, complete with artifacts & exhibits, some of which are eventually displayed at the Historical Society. Ruth Ellen was originally a classroom teacher, with her NYS certification in social studies. In addition to her hectic museum & family lives, she has also recently started work on a Masters degree in Literacy.

Erin Crissman

Stepping Stones Foundation


Erin Crissman is a museum curator specializing in interpretation and holistic collections management practices.  She holds a BA in American Studies from SUNY Geneseo and an MA in History Museum Studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program.  Her work is informed by curatorial positions at Historic Cherry Hill, Albany, NY, Stepping Stones Foundation, Katonah, NY, in addition to consulting work.  Her master’s thesis, Solomon Van Rensselaer:  “A Man of No Business Whatsoever,” examines elites after the American Revolution, with an eye to alternative interpretation of changes faced by colonial families in a shifting social structure.

Dana Krueger

Emerson Gallery at Hamilton College, Clinton

Dana L. Krueger is the Registrar for the Emerson Gallery at Hamilton College in Clinton, NY. She has completed her MA in Museum Studies at Syracuse University, where she also received her MS in Art Education in May 2006. She has a BA in Studio Art – Painting and Drawing from St. Lawrence University. Previous to her current position, Dana was the Collections Manager at Madison County Historical Society in Oneida, NY. She has also worked in numerous galleries and art centers, including Old Forge Arts Center, Adirondack Lakes Center for the Arts, and the Earlville Opera House.

Dana now volunteers at the Earlville Opera House as a member of the Gallery Committee. She resides in Hamilton, NY where she continues to produce art in her home studio.

Bradley McCreary
Museum Director
Sodus Bay Lighthouse Museum

Bradley McCreary is presently Museum Director of the Sodus Bay Lighthouse Museum (SBLHM) situated on Lake Ontario alongside Great Sodus Bay. His lighthouse tenure began April 1, 2005. His responsibilities cover every aspect of museum operations. The museum has seen a 100% increase in visitor numbers since May 2005. Costs have been reduced resulting in financial stability. From February 2000 to September 20, 2004, I was Museum Deputy Director/ Retail and Admissions Manager of the Cotswold Motoring Museum (CMM) and Toy Collection in the United Kingdom. During his years at the CMM we saw visitor numbers grow from less than 40,000 to nearly 100,000. Mr. McCreary was integral with every aspect of museum development and operations including, educational program, retail and admission programs, front of house, facilities design and physical construction of gift shop and exhibition spaces, curatorial concerns and restoration and preservation of archives and objects. Mr. McCreary has also worked with numerous British and European heritage organizations.

Deanna Pace

1890 House, Cortland

Deanna L. Pace received her BA in Secondary Social Studies Education from Keuka College.  During college she completed two collections management internships at Lorenzo State Historic Site.  Upon completing her degree in the fall of 1996 she was hired as the Education and Private Events Coordinator at the site.  The position entailed multiple responsibilities including overseeing weddings, and other private events.  She worked to carefully expand group tours and implemented the highly successful immersion program at the ca. 1814 Rippleton schoolhouse. The program recreates a historically accurate school day through the use of role-play. In July of 2004 she was hired as the Director of the 1890 House museum where she oversees all aspects of museum operations.  Since then she has worked with the Board of Trustees to improve marketing through a new ad campaign, website, and makeover of the museums newsletter.  Existing interpretation and educational programs have been improved, new programs have been added and three new rooms have been opened for interpretation.  These efforts have resulted in doubling attendance at the museum, realizing a 300% increase in funding from the County legislature in 2005, and tripling net income from the facilities largest fundraiser, its annual auction.

Kimberly Richards
Educational Grants Specialist
GST BOCES, Elmira, NY
 
Kimberly Richards received her Bachelors Degree in History from the State University of New York at Buffalo and her Masters Degree from Wright State University in Dayton, OH.  Upon completing her Masters, she was hired as the Archivist at the Chemung County Historical Society, in Elmira, NY in January 2005.  After joining CCHS, she not only joined the UHA board, but was asked to sit on the Region 6 DHP Advisory Committee.  During her time at CCHS, she worked on numerous museum projects, the most recent being the upgrade of the Society’s website to support an online database for all archival holdings.  This database provides researchers with descriptions and locations of documents and is the most comprehensive inventory of the society’s collections to date.  At the time of her departure in December 2007, half of all archival collections have been entered on this database for researchers to view.  Recently, she accepted a position at GST BOCES as a grant writer.  The grants division at BOCES currently services 11 school districts throughout the Southern Tier.  She is looking forward to learning more about granting opportunities and the new challenges that lie ahead.

Kenneth Shefsiek

Geneva Historical Society, NY

Ken recently joined the Geneva Historical Society as executive director following the completion of his coursework for the Ph.D. in American History at the University of Georgia. He is currently working on his dissertation, currently entitled "Stone House Days: Constructing the Past in the Hudson Valley." Previously Ken served as Curator of Education at the Huguenot Historical Society, and he holds a master's degree in heritage preservation from Georgia State University. Additionally, he received degrees in music from Ithaca College and New England Conservatory.

Mari Shopsis

Rensselaer County Historical Society

Mari Shopsis is the Director of Education for the Rensselaer County Historical Society. She has previously served as the Interim Director of Education at The History Center in Tompkins County and the Manager of School and Public Programs at the Everson Museum of Art. Mari has a MS.Ed from the Leadership in Museum Education Program at Bank Street College of Education and is committed to making museums meaningful and accessible to new audiences.

One of the first things Mari did upon moving to Upstate New York was to attend an education workshop put on by the Upstate History Alliance. She has gone on to participate in other UHA projects, including the Interpretative Assessment program and the Sagamore Institute, and is pleased to be able to contribute to the work of this important and vibrant organization.

Peter Wisbey
Executive Director
Seward House, Auburn

Peter has been Executive Director of Seward House since October 2000. Prior to that, he held curatorial positions at Genesee Country Village & Museum in Mumford, NY, the Monmouth County Historical Association in Freehold, NJ, and the Worcester Historical Museum in Massachusetts. He received a B.A. from St. Lawrence University, an M.A. in History Museum Studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program, and an M.A. in Early American Culture from the University of Delaware/Winterthur Program. He is a frequent consultant to small museums on collections documentation and storage.
