South Central Region Archives Month Program:

Building Bridges: Making Historical Records Relevant in the Classroom

October 31, 2008- 9:00am - 4:00pm at the Roberson Museum and Science Center, Binghamton

This is a practical one-day workshop that will help the bridge the gap between teachers and their community's cultural organizations.

As New York State educators work to meet the needs of their students while simultaneously being concerned with state education standards and testing, New York's cultural organizations are also working to develop programming and resources that will prove to be relevant to the classroom experience. Participants in this full-day workshop will walk away with: a better understanding of the New York State Standards for Education; an inside perspective from a teacher; in-depth knowledge of some of the leading programs offered by New York's cultural organizations; hands-on experience in working to develop education programs that meet the needs of students, teachers and cultural organizations.

How Will You Celebrate Archives Month?

Archives Month is an annual month-long observance of the importance of archival and historical records to people's lives. The observance of Archives Month began in New York in the late 1980s when groups of archivists in various regions of the State decided to hold special events and activities at a particular time each year to increase public awareness of the relevance of archives to modern life.

October 2008 is American Archives Mont and a very special year for the New York State Archives. It is the 30th anniversary of the Archives and the 20th anniversary of the Documentary Heritage Program! Here' a great opportunity to raise awareness among key audiences of the value of archives and archivists and engage local communities in exploring the heritage, culture and wealth of history we New Yorkers share! At the same time, it is a way to emphasize that the evidence of this history exists in the historical documents, photographs and artificats that cultural institutions such as archives, historical societies, libraries, and museums commit to collect, and make available. .

We encourage museums, archives, and other historical records repositories to plan events that highlight their own historical records holdings. Over the past several years different organizations have celebrated Archives Month in a variety of ways, both big and small. Types of activities have included:

• Displays & Exhibits
• Dinners, Banquets, & Awards Presentations
• Family History or Genealogy Days
• Lectures, Film or Slide Shows
• Open Houses or Special Tours

The reasons for participating in Archives Month are substantial. Increased public awareness of historical records can translate into increased financial support. Outreach activities can also help the general public and resource allocators such as trustees, administrators, and local and state legislators appreciate and understand the true importance of historical records.

To help you plan your activities, the State Archives has published an Archives Month Action Guide, available on-line at www.archives.nysed.gov
