Archives and repositories hold a wealth of information, often caring for pieces of history that, if destroyed, would be lost forever. This information is not only useful for researchers, but for the general public as well. Some documents held in repositories have been used in schools as resources for Document Based Question writing exercises. A day spent at a repository could uncover historical treasures about your family, community, or businesses in your area.

The South Central Region of the Documentary Heritage Program, administered by the Upstate History Alliance, is pleased to announce the availability of a wall-hanging exhibition that explores the meaning, use and preservation of archives and historical records. The exhibit uses images of historical records from repositories throughout upstate New York, including photographs, maps, and even an image of young William Seward’s math exercises.

This high-quality exhibit consists of four 52"x26" panels and hardware for hanging. The exhibit can also be accompanied by archival materials from your own collection, drawing attention to the important work being done at your organization by preserving and caring for historic records.

This exhibition was produced in duplicate, so two copies are available for loan at your organization. The exhibit is available on a first-come, first-serve basis, with preference given to organizations in the South Central Region (Allegany, Broome, Cayuga, Chemung, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, Schuyler, Seneca, Steuben, Tioga, Tompkins and Yates counties). The cost of this exhibit is minimal--$100.00 which includes shipping and handling. Venues may host this exhibit for up to eight weeks in a low-security environment.
